Tips To Help Make Life With A Catheter A Little Easier
Living With A Urinary Catheter › Forums › General Discussion › UTI after Urethroplasty
Hey,
I had a successful urethroplasty in June. Everything seemed fine until last week when i had some lower abdominal pains. I went to the doctor and it turns out i have a bladder infection. I wanted to know if anyone else has had a UTI after catheter removal and if so what were the follow up tests? I had a SP tube in for around 7 months and removed at the end of July. Flow is still really good and i barely have any lower urinary tract symptoms even before i started the anti biotics. So please let me know if any of you had UTIs and if they could signal something important.
Best
Bob,
I got a UTI after every catheter change, but it was usually within a few days of it. Your catheter has been out since July?
For a while after surgery our urethra is more susceptible to infection, partly because of possible bacteria still hanging around (bacteria is always present when we have a catheter), and the irritated tissue from the incisions themselves.
I’m not a doctor, but I would go ahead and take the antibiotics, then have a urine culture done afterward to see if there’s any remaining bacteria or yeast around.
I wouldn’t get too worked up about it though, as long as you’re still urinating fine there shouldn’t be a problem with the surgery itself.
