Tips To Help Make Life With A Catheter A Little Easier
Living With A Urinary Catheter › Forums › General Discussion › Thank You for This Site!
Hi All!
I’m Nick, 27 years old. I just found out in March that I had a stricture from a pediatric Urology Surgeon who my Urologist referred me too. Due to my living situation, I had to schedule the surgery for November 2016, which gave (and still is giving me!) a LOT of time to dwell on my nervousness for my end to end Urethroplasty :(. As the rule says “don’t Google medical procedures before you get them,” and, up until today, I have followed that rule. This is the first site I came to, and it’s actually LOWERED my anxiety.
I had to have a scope and the dye exam, which wasn’t fun! The scope wasn’t too bad, but for some reason the catheter from the dye exam was extremely painful. They actually had to give me oxygen to keep me from passing out from the pain! The stricture is tiny, and they will go in through the peridium (not sure on the spelling).
How was the pain immediately following surgery? Is it worse than a botched catheter? The experience is different for all, but this site has given my a lot of confidence that it’s not going to be nearly as bad as my imagination has led me to believe. I’ve had a few restless nights due to my anxiety on this!
I am 5 weeks post end to end. My recovery was fine. I had some nerve damage from the positioning I was in. But other than that very little pain. I took the oxy as prescribed for the first 5 days. And then for a few more days at night. To be honest I didn’t need it I bet.
The catheter was annoying and caused the most problems. The surgeon routed mine up to my belly and I just kept it that way for the 31 days I had a cath.
Day 2 of recovery I went to my neighbors for lunch. By week two I drove once. By week three I was driving every day I bet and walking with the dog and wife at night. Week 4 I was sitting upright again.
Week 5 now I am back at work, no issues except for the lunch room chairs. I get a twinge of pain every now and then. I had my first non-catheter erection last night and that was tight and painful, I am sure it will get better.
