ParticipantJust checking back in because it crossed my mind. All is well. I spent so much of my life with an uncorrected stricture that it still amazes me every time I pee that this can be so easy. I look forward to the day when I don’t even think about that anymore.

ParticipantGood to hear Luke! I know often times I will not think about my own surgery. I still do, of course, but it’s not every time i go to the bathroom. I have my 1 year follow up this Wednesday, so we’ll see what the doc has to say.

ParticipantCouldn’t agree more, Luke. It has been AMAZING since having this corrected last March. As weird as it sounds, I still look forward to peeing, every time. I think the idea of having that part of your body opened up is definitely scary as well as having a catheter in for an extended period of time. I know thats why I put it off. Only advice I’d ever have would be to not think twice about it and just have it done as soon as possible.

ParticipantHi Luke, I know it’s been a few years now… how’s the flow now after the procedure? I”m 43 and have had a stricture for the last 27 yrs but haven’t had an issue urinating other than a weak stream. I do have blood drops now and then but it’s bearable. I started with a single stricture and was dilated about 10 times over the period. I now have a second stricture and my urologist recommended a urethrotomy but I’m wondering if I should go straight for the urethroplasty.
thanks

ParticipantHey Ajju,
Sorry to hear you’re suffering. I have great flow, no blood, no drips, no pain. I’d do the urethroplasty again in a heartbeat. Will PM you my doc’s info.

ParticipantHi Luke,
I read your recovery story and was pretty amazed about it. Thanks for sharing your story.
My father was diagnosed with enlarged prostate for the past 8 years he did a biopsy in 2012 and luckily was not cancerous so he was just taking medication for enlarged prostate until April 17, 2016 when that night he couldn’t pee and had to go to emergency in the morning to get a catheter and was advised for see his Urologist . On April 19 we went to the Urologist he checked and said that his prostate is too large and he will put him in the list for Cystoscopy, removed the catheter and asked him to go back to emergency if he is not able to pee.Long story short, many times his catheter was removed and when we go home he couldn’t pee then we had to go back to emergency to insert the catheter. May 03 we went back to Urologist, he booked him for Cystoscopy for June 01, 2016 and asked him to be in catheter in the meantime. On June 01, 2016, he did the Cystoscopy and was able to pee in the hospital in front of the doctor. The doctor removed the catheter again and said that he will put him in the list for surgery. When we got home that night he couldn’t pee and we had to rush to emergency and this time they insert a 24 inch catheter to flush out the blood clots caused as a result of Cystoscopy. In the hospital when the doctor noticed that my dad suffered a lot he put him for surgery for June 29, 2016. He had the Green Light laser surgery and had a catheter for 5 days. Once the catheter was removed after a couple of weeks he was back to normal and pee again and he was fine with only 2-3 times wake up at night to use the bathroom. He visited the Urologist every 6 months to a year and everything seemed fine.
On Feb 9th, 2018 morning he saw some blood while urinating and his urine was coming as drips. We got scared and took him to emergency. While waiting for our turn in the emergency I made him drink 4 bottles of water and he started to pee normal and clear with no blood. We did the blood and urine tests and the emergency doctor just give him some antibiotics and asked him to follow up with his Urologist as tests seemed to be normal. From his visit until he saw the Urologist on March 8, 2018, everything was back to normal, no blood and pee normally. During his visit to the Urologist office on March 8th, he was asked to come to the hospital for a cystoscopy scheduled for April 12, 2017. When we went for Cystoscopy, the doctor was not able to perform it because tissues grew that made the passage too narrow and they need to be cut. He booked my father for VIU surgery for May 30th, 2018 which is two days from today.
Although he has no issues other than one day bleeding on Feb 9th, 2018 I don’t know why the doctor wants him to do this VIU procedure. Is it to prevent future issues? From your posts it seems that Urethroplasty is a better option than Urethrotomy can you pleases comments on that. My father is 69 years old and we live in Toronto Canada.
I really appreciate your inputs.
Thanks

ParticipantSara-
My husband is only 46 (soon to be 47 in a couple weeks). He had a urethroplasty 4 years ago June 13th. Prior to his surgery, he had 3 urethrotomy surgeries and the 3rd one the urologist came out after surgery and told me he that he had a blockage and couldn’t go up much at all and he would have to have a urethroplasty. I did alot of research and I did find that urethrotomies can cause structures. It sounds like your dad would definitely benefit from a urethroplasty! My husband knock on wood is doing great since his surgery.
My dad is from Renfrew, Ontario Canada. And, all his family is still there.
I live in upstate New York and my husband’s urologist is in Syracuse NY. He is just absolutely amazing. I don’t know if your dad would be able to come to the States but if he could and you need more information please let me know.
Best of luck!

ParticipantSara,
Good luck to your dad. I undergo a urethral dilation procedure today myself.

ParticipantMy doctor stressed to me that repeat urethrotomy and dilation are not curative for urethral stricture. The only thing that is curative is urethroplasty. Many urologists are not trained or comfortable performing urethroplasties and so they don’t recommend it. Of course, they don’t have to suffer the trauma the patient does, going in repeatedly for dilations and cystoscopies! My first urologist was like that.
Find a fellowship-trained reconstructive urologist.

ParticipantHi all,
Thank you so much for responses.
Jennifer – I am glad to hear that your husband is doing well and your family is from Ontario Canada 🙂 Unfortunately we can’t afford to come to states for treatment otherwise I would have done so. The wait time for operations are very long in Canada. Last time my father was on catheter for over 2 months waiting for prostate surgery.
barry – Thank you. I hope everything went well and wish you fast recovery.
Was it your first time doing this procedure? did it take too long? How long are you going to be in catheter.Luke – thanks for explaining. My father said that his urologist recommend urethrotomy based on my dad age and fast recovery time. The surgery is tomorrow I will have a chat with the surgeon prior to the procedure to see why he didn’t go for urethroplasty.
Did anyone here do urethrotomy or urethroplasty post prostate surgery?
Thank you all. Please pray for my dad.

ParticipantMy husband never had prostate surgery. He had 3 urethrotomies before his urethroplasty.
Yes I know the wait in Canada is long as I’ve been told from my family.
Best if luck to your dad and I’ll say a prayer for him!

ParticipantSara,
I am doing ok. Had my procedure. I am tired but ok.
I have a penile stricture and I have been surgically dilated once before about 12 years ago. Since then, I have self dilated once a day. It kept things open until about a month ago when it started getting tight again.
My local urologist wanted to dilate since I managed so well for so long. He thought that would be more ideal than a major surgery like urethroplasty. We will see if this lasts for awhile.

ParticipantSara,
I am 75 years old. Was treated for prostate cancer 10 years ago with radiation. Developed a stricture in my prostate after 6 years. Could not pee. For the next four years I was treated with dilations then 3 urethrotomies and finally I had to use self catheterizations. Three years of pain. A urologist finally told me about urethroplasty. Researched and found a doctor at Loyola University in Chicago IL who is highly rated. A year ago he placed a Super Public catheter in my stomach to let the stricture heal with the intent to do a Urethroplasty in September of 2017. Hurricane Irma interfered with the surgery and rescheduled for April 17th of 2018. Had the surgery. Took a month to heal and for the last two weeks I have peed better then ever. Should have had Urethroplasty over three years ago. Every thing else was a waste except for the Super Public tube which worked well. Had to have it changed every month. Still having some pain from the stiches but can sit ok. Just use some Tylenol.I know I will be ok for the future. Urethroplasty is the Gold Standard.
