I had two urethrotemies performed. While they provided some temporary relief, they did not last. I assume your doctor is recommending this over urethroplasty either for risk or cost or both. Those urethrotemy procedures are not simple procedures either. My second one involved a hospital stay. Self dialation adds risk to the urethra as well.
I completed urethroplasty 8 weeks ago and I absolutely believe that anyone with strictures should strongly consider urethroplasty after 1 failed urethrotemy. However, I do believe it is important to consult with someone who is an expert and very experienced in the urethroplasty procedure. If that physician is confident he/she can be successful in correcting your issue with urethroplasty, then you should proceed accordingly.
Knowing what I know now, I would have never even bothered with the 2nd urethrotemy that I had. Urethroplasty is life altering (for the good)!!!! I’m SO SO happy with my result.
